Office 365 updates in development

Office 365 Notification Pane

The new notification pane will provide end users with a single place to catch up on all system events (i.e. system alerts like password expiration, new emails, calendar reminders and eventually group likes) and will be available across apps in the Office 365 web experience. In order to access this new feature, a user simply clicks on the top right notification icon to open the notification pane.

Excel Online improvements

Support editing and refreshing of workbooks containing Power Views and inserting PivotTables.

OneDrive for Business Sync for Mac

Mac OS X will get a standalone desktop sync client application that enables desktop syncing between a user’s OneDrive for Business folder in Office 365 and his or her computer.

Office Online support in Yammer

With Office Online support in Yammer, documents uploaded to Yammer can be viewed and edited with Office Online, directly in Yammer. This allows documents to be beautifully rendered with Office Online directly in the context of all relevant Yammer conversations.

Multiple timeline bars in Project Pro for Office 365

In Project Pro for Office 365 you will be able to create multiple timeline bars within the Timeline view. You will also be able to set a custom date range for each timeline bar in order to just highlight a certain time period of the project in the Timeline view.

Office for iPad

Free iPad versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint are now available on the Apple App Store. The apps offer the core capabilities of each application, with usability and display tailored to tablets. The free versions of the apps allow users read-only capability. Office 365 subscribers have full editing and creation permissions.

Office 365 subscribers can integrate these apps with their OneDrive to expand availability of their files. Formatting and functionality are insured to be preserved in files created on different platforms.

Details from Corinne Hoisington:

“Office 365 rolled out for the iPad and iPhone for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in the Apple Store. The apps are free, but require an Office 365 subscription for full usage. If you do not have an account, you can view your documents, but you need an account to edit your documents. This product is lightweight and not a full Office install.

  • Microsoft does a very nice job of exploiting the multi-touch environment of the iPad.
  • One feature that’s unique to the iPad version is a laser pointer in PowerPoint that appears when you tap and hold down the display in presentation mode.
  • You get access to images, charts and tables, footnotes and more in Word.
  • In Excel, there’s a full complement of financial, logical, date and time and other formulas.
  • A personal version for one computer and one tablet of Office 365 is due this spring for $69.99 a year.

So is this a game changer? Not to the college teaching environment, but for the personal use of tablets at home — maybe.”

Office Web Apps renamed to Office Online

In February, Microsoft announced that Office Web Apps is now called Office Online. The main functionality improvement mentioned in relation to this change is real-time co-authoring, a more robust and straight-forward way to collaborate on documents with others simultaneously in the Word, PowerPoint, and Excel Web apps.

Along with this change, Microsoft has renamed the cloud storage system from SkyDrive to OneDrive.

Office Online and OneDrive are both designed to be fully integrated with Office 365.
